đźš— Car AC Compressor Troubleshooting Guide

🔍 1. Check the Basics First

Before assuming the compressor is bad, rule out simple issues:

  • Is the AC button actually on?

  • Is the blower fan working?

  • Is the cabin air filter clogged? (restricted airflow can mimic AC failure)

  • Is the engine overheating? (AC may shut off to protect the engine)

⚡ 2. Does the Compressor Clutch Engage?

When you turn on the AC, you should hear a click and see the clutch plate spin.

If the clutch does NOT engage:

  • Low refrigerant (most common cause)

  • Blown fuse or bad relay

  • Faulty pressure switch

  • Bad clutch coil

  • Broken wiring or poor ground

If the clutch engages but cycles rapidly:

  • Low refrigerant charge

  • Blocked expansion valve/orifice tube

  • Weak compressor

❄️ 3. Check Refrigerant Levels

Low refrigerant = compressor won’t run or will short-cycle.

Signs of low refrigerant:

  • AC blows cool but not cold

  • Hissing from the evaporator area

  • Oil stains on AC lines (leak indicator)

🧊 4. Listen for Unusual Noises

Different sounds point to different failures:

NoisePossible Cause
Grinding / metal-on-metalInternal compressor failure
SquealingBad clutch bearing or belt
Clicking repeatedlyLow refrigerant or bad relay
HissingNormal equalization OR leak

🌡️ 5. Check Line Temperatures

With AC running:

  • High-pressure line should be hot

  • Low-pressure line should be cold

If both lines are the same temperature:

  • Compressor isn’t pumping

  • Expansion valve/orifice tube is blocked

  • System is empty

🧪 6. Inspect for Leaks

Common leak points:

  • Compressor front seal

  • Hose crimps

  • Condenser

  • Schrader valves

  • Evaporator (hardest to detect)

A UV dye light makes this much easier.

⚙️ 7. Electrical Checks

If the compressor clutch isn’t engaging:

  • Test the AC relay

  • Check the compressor clutch connector for power

  • Inspect pressure switches

  • Verify ground connections

🧭 8. Signs the Compressor Itself Is Bad

If you see these, the compressor is likely failing:

  • Clutch engages but no pressure change on gauges

  • Metal shavings in the AC system

  • Loud grinding or rattling

  • High-side pressure spikes rapidly

  • Low-side pressure stays high (no suction)
